The Lisbon City Council decided this Friday to award the Municipal Medal of Cultural Merit to the journalist Dennis Redmont.
In a secret ballot, among the 17 members of the Council, with one absent, the ratification received 16 votes in favor, a source from the office of Mayor Carlos Moedas (PSD), who signed the proposals, told Lusa.
“With 16 votes in favor, the Chamber awarded the prize to American journalist Dennis Redmont, born in Washington, United States, who graduated from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and joined the Associated Press in New York, arriving in Lisbon in January 1965, “becoming the youngest correspondent of that agency” in the Portuguese capital. “In Lisbon, where he lived part of his life and where he still lives, Dennis Redmont wrote countless reports on a variety of topics, such as dictatorship, civil society, decolonization and many other social and cultural issues,” the City Council said, stating that, more than 50 years after his arrival, the journalist “continues to write in Lisbon and about Lisbon and Portugal, in the city that chose and welcomed him.”
